Yellowknife holds the majority of observatory infrastructure and experienced educators, while 27 of the territory’s 33 communities lie outside reliable road access and experience teacher turnover rates above 25 percent annually. Indigenous youth in communities such as Paulatuk and Ulukhaktok encounter additional barriers from limited classroom materials that incorporate Inuvialuit or Dene knowledge systems alongside scientific explanations of geomagnetic activity. Population density of 0.04 persons per square kilometer restricts in-person programming, and seasonal darkness patterns differ sharply between the taiga and tundra zones. Projects must demonstrate capacity to deliver content via satellite or radio networks that reach 18 communities currently without fiber connections. Applicants need to show prior experience coordinating with Aurora Research Institute permits and community education councils that control school calendars aligned with hunting seasons. Unlike Nunavut applications, the Northwest Territories requires separate tracking of Gwich’in and Sahtu settlement regions, where land claim agreements mandate local hiring quotas of at least 35 percent for education initiatives. Reviewers examine whether delivery methods account for 24-hour summer daylight that eliminates aurora visibility for three months in southern communities.
