Grant Overview
The Northwest Territories face significant climate change-related challenges, with warming occurring at a rate twice the global average. This rapid warming is having profound impacts on the territory's infrastructure, ecosystems, and communities, particularly in the context of permafrost thaw and increased extreme weather events. The barrier to addressing these challenges is not just the scale of the impacts but also the capacity of communities and infrastructure to adapt. Many of the territory's 33 communities are small and remote, with limited infrastructure and workforce capacity. The grant funding available for climate change resilience in the Northwest Territories prioritizes initiatives that can effectively address these capacity gaps while building community resilience. Successful applicants will demonstrate an understanding of the territory's unique cultural and environmental context, including the importance of traditional knowledge and Indigenous-led climate monitoring. Unlike neighboring Nunavut, the Northwest Territories has a more diverse economy, with significant mining and tourism sectors, requiring climate resilience strategies that can address these specific industries. The territory's geographic diversity, from the boreal forests of the south to the Arctic tundra of the north, demands adaptable and context-specific solutions. Applicants must demonstrate an understanding of these regional dynamics and develop targeted strategies to address the unique climate-related challenges facing different parts of the territory. The funding available will support organizations that can effectively integrate Western science and traditional knowledge to build climate resilience in Northwest Territories communities. The territory's 11 official languages, including several Indigenous languages, present both a challenge and an opportunity for community-based climate resilience initiatives. Organizations that can effectively engage with communities in their own languages will be better positioned to support climate resilience across the territory.
