Grant Overview
The Northwest Territories operates only two full-time neurologists for a land area larger than any other Canadian jurisdiction. This ratio produces average wait times for frontotemporal dementia assessment exceeding 14 months in communities outside Yellowknife. Workforce constraints are compounded by the requirement that all specialist positions be filled through locum arrangements rather than permanent territorial hires.
Existing research capacity rests with the Aurora Research Institute and the territorial health authority, both of which maintain limited biobanking infrastructure and no on-site PET imaging. Any study requiring advanced imaging must transport samples to Edmonton, adding both cost and temperature-control variables unique to subarctic conditions.
The funding addresses workforce gaps by permitting salary support for locally trained research assistants who can conduct standardised cognitive assessments in nine official languages. It further authorises equipment-sharing agreements with the Stanton Territorial Hospital that do not rely on southern institutional partners.
Applications must demonstrate that the principal investigator has secured data-sharing agreements with at least two Indigenous governments and that the protocol accommodates seasonal mobility patterns of Dene and Inuit communities. Proposals that assume year-round access to a fixed participant pool will fail this test.
The program’s design therefore diverges from southern territorial models by treating workforce transience and linguistic fragmentation as core methodological parameters rather than peripheral logistics.
