The Northwest Territories requires sculptors seeking this international grant to prove at least seven years of professional output and to list current studio addresses within one of the 33 communities recognized by territorial statute. Because the grant operates without regional restrictions, applicants from Yellowknife, Hay River, or Inuvik compete on the same terms as those from any country.
Most active sculptors maintain workspaces in Yellowknife’s Old Town or near the highway corridor south of the city. These locations offer reliable power and indoor climate control necessary for year-round work with metal and stone. Artists in smaller communities such as Tuktoyaktuk or Fort Simpson must factor generator fuel and seasonal darkness into project timelines submitted with the application.
Documentation includes exhibition histories, material invoices, and two references from curators outside Canada. The grant does not accept collaborative or community-led projects unless the applicant can demonstrate sole authorship through dated contracts and material receipts.
Applicants must also attach a one-page equipment list confirming access to welding, carving, or casting tools. Reviewers cross-check this list against territorial import records when materials arrive by air or winter road.
Funding arrives in a single lump sum with no reporting requirement beyond a final photograph of completed work. Northwest Territories recipients still file a territorial tax schedule that treats the award as professional income.
Applications from the Northwest Territories stand apart because reviewers require a signed winter-road or air-cargo cost schedule whenever stone or metal exceeds 200 kilograms, a constraint created by the territory’s seasonal transportation windows.
