The Northwest Territories spans 1.3 million square kilometres with a population density of 0.04 persons per square kilometre, creating workforce gaps that directly constrain cancer research throughput. Only 18 pathologists and oncologists serve the entire territory, and all are based in Yellowknife.
Workforce_first studies must therefore budget for locum coverage so that community health representatives in 33 smaller settlements can maintain routine duties while participating in data collection. Training modules must be delivered in English, French, and three Indigenous languages.
Infrastructure constraints include reliance on the single all-season highway between Alberta and Yellowknife plus winter roads that operate only between January and March. Any equipment heavier than 2 000 kg requires air transport at costs exceeding CAD 12 per kilogram.
Readiness requirements embedded in successful applications include pre-positioned telemedicine terminals in every participating health centre and satellite bandwidth reservations that guarantee 10 Mbps upload during peak research windows. Funding mechanisms reward protocols that train local nurses to perform venipuncture rather than flying external phlebotomists.
Unlike applications focused on British Columbia or Alberta, the Northwest Territories requires demonstration of extreme rural delivery capacity due to frontier county designation and limited tertiary pathology services outside Yellowknife.
