Cost constraints in the Northwest Territories arise primarily from air freight and satellite internet expenses that can exceed 35 percent of a typical southern research budget. Infrastructure constraints center on limited laboratory space at Aurora College campuses and the absence of dedicated cold-storage facilities outside Yellowknife. Workforce limitations include a small pool of local research assistants holding both scientific instrumentation experience and Indigenous language fluency. Applicants must therefore budget for external consultants when community knowledge holders cannot be compensated through standard university pay scales.
Readiness requirements include a completed territorial research license application and a data-sharing agreement with the Aurora Research Institute prior to submission. Budgets showing reliance on southern shipping without contingency for seasonal runway closures are routinely returned for revision.
Fit assessment favors projects that embed translation of philosophical source materials within existing aurora observation protocols, allowing shared use of instrumentation time.
