Grant Funding Award for School-Based Environmental Projects in Northwest Territories (Canada)
GrantID: 75352
Grant Funding Amount Low: $1,500
Deadline: Ongoing
Grant Amount High: $3,000
Summary
Eligible recipients include primary and secondary schools, as well as post-secondary institutions, faculty, student associations, and student groups. The grants are not intended for for-profit ventures or commercial enterprises. Projects must take place within the school or campus environment (or directly engage that community) and must align with learning, restoration, and habitat goals.
Awarded funds can be used for activities such as planting native species, creating pollinator gardens, restoring riparian or forest zones, developing seed orchards, monitoring wildlife, or integrating habitat zones into outdoor learning spaces. Funds may also pay for supplies, materials, soil, small equipment, communication or documentation of the project, and relevant community outreach or awareness efforts. However, salaries for ongoing staff or general overhead outside project scope are typically not covered.
Grant amounts vary by educational level: for primary and secondary schools, the award is generally about CAD 1,500 per approved project. For post-secondary campuses, the grants are larger (around CAD 2,000) to match bigger project scope. Projects are selected each fall, with funds supporting activity during the following academic cycle.
Deadlines usually fall between early September and late October each year, with project execution happening during the subsequent months or school year. The program awards multiple grants annually—often dozens—across the country. Success is often measured by project impact, community engagement, biodiversity outcomes, and the capacity to sustain or expand efforts over time.
