Researchers must therefore transport their own calibrated all-sky cameras and demonstrate they can power them from solar or generator sources without exceeding territorial emissions limits for remote camps.
Infrastructure and Workforce Constraints Winter roads open for an average of 62 days annually, constraining equipment movement to a narrow window. The territory employs fewer than 15 Indigenous community research coordinators with aurora tourism permits, requiring applicants to complete a mandatory two-day cultural orientation in Yellowknife before any field deployment.
Risk Compliance Requirements Applications must include a spill prevention plan for generator fuel and a wildlife encounter protocol signed by the local hunters and trappers committee. The $3,000 award reimburses only documented costs incurred after the research licence from the Aurora Research Institute is issued. Unlike applications in Yukon, Northwest Territories funding requires real-time GPS tracking of all field personnel and daily satellite check-ins logged with the territorial emergency measures office.
