Addressing Capacity Gaps for Renewable Energy Projects in the Northwest Territories

The Northwest Territories are facing significant capacity gaps in the transition to renewable energy sources. Nearly 90% of the electricity generated in the region comes from non-renewable sources, presenting a challenge as communities strive for energy independence and sustainability. Additionally, high energy costs due to reliance on diesel and a lack of local skilled labor in renewable energy installation highlight the urgent need for programs that can build capacity in this sector.

Rural and remote communities often lack the infrastructure required to support renewable energy initiatives, such as solar and wind installations. Numerous residents live in communities that are only accessible by seasonal ice roads or air travel, making it difficult to transport necessary materials and equipment. Coupled with limited access to training programs, these barriers have prevented the successful implementation of community-led renewable energy projects thus far.

The grant program aims to empower local initiatives by providing funding for community-led renewable energy projects focused on solar and wind energy. By investing in projects that incorporate both technology and training components, the program addresses immediate capacity gaps while fostering long-term self-sufficiency and job creation within the territory.
