Grant Overview

Wild Game Protein Utilization Research in Northwest Territories

The Northwest Territories (NWT) presents unique capacity gaps in food production, particularly regarding alternative proteins. With an expansive but sparsely populated landscape, many communities grapple with limited access to diverse food sources, contributing to food insecurity and dietary challenges. Given that over 80% of the population identifies as Indigenous, there is an ongoing need to incorporate traditional harvesting practices that have sustained these communities for generations while adapting to modern nutritional standards.

Local communities, particularly Indigenous groups, are centrally affected by this issue. Many residents often have to rely on expensive and sometimes less nutritious food shipments from the south, leading to significant barriers in food sovereignty and cultural identity. The amalgamation of geographic isolation and high transportation costs exacerbates these challenges, hindering the ability of residents to access healthy and affordable food options.

This grant supports groundbreaking research focused on utilizing wild game as an alternative protein source. By examining traditional harvesting practices, the initiative seeks to ensure sustainable game management while developing new food products that are culturally relevant and nutritionally beneficial. Researchers will work closely with Indigenous communities to ensure that their knowledge and practices are respected and integrated into research methodologies, thus empowering local populations.

The desired outcomes of this initiative encompass improved access to traditional foods, leading to enhanced dietary health among community members and the promotion of cultural preservation. Participants in the research will have the opportunity to contribute directly to product development and community engagement, guaranteeing that the outcomes are relevant and beneficial.

Moreover, this approach will create a platform for Indigenous voices and practices to be recognized within the broader food system, ensuring that the unique context of the Northwest Territories is central to protein production discussions. By promoting the use of wild game, this initiative not only aims to improve food security but also to strengthen cultural ties to traditional practices.
