Northwest Territories applicants must hold current registration with a territorial educational institution or Indigenous government organization and propose activities occurring within the boundaries of the Northwest Territories. Eligible entities include Aurora College campuses, band councils representing the 11 official language communities, and registered non-profit societies with a physical address in Yellowknife, Hay River, Inuvik or Iqaluit-adjacent communities served by NWT infrastructure.
Application packages require a letter of support from the relevant Indigenous government or the Aurora Research Institute confirming alignment with existing research licensing under the Scientists Act. Budgets must itemize expenditures for equipment, travel on the Dempster or Mackenzie highways, and facility use at northern research stations.
The $10,000 ceiling limits awards to single-season initiatives rather than multi-year operations. Reviewers verify that proposed youth participation occurs during periods when auroral activity is observable from NWT latitudes between 60 and 78 degrees north.
Proposals originating from outside the territory or lacking explicit collaboration with NWT-based meteorological data collection programs do not meet threshold criteria. This requirement distinguishes Northwest Territories applications from those submitted in Yukon or Nunavut, where different permitting regimes and institutional partners apply.
