Grant Overview

Northwest Territories Language Partnership Eligibility The Northwest Territories maintains 49 schools across a land area of 1.18 million square kilometres, with 45 percent of students identifying as Indigenous. Current territorial records list 312 students whose families report primary languages of Mandarin, Korean, Tagalog or Vietnamese, yet no territorial educator currently holds certified advanced proficiency in these languages. Eligibility requires applicants to hold a valid Northwest Territories teaching certificate and to have completed at least two full years of service in a community school. Partnership letters from one of the eight recognized language training institutions in East or Southeast Asia must accompany each application. The letter must specify that the proposed program delivers 300 contact hours and includes assessment aligned to ACTFL Superior or equivalent. Because the territory reimburses only 60 percent of travel costs for northern residents under existing professional development rules, the grant supplies the remaining CDN $6,400 for airfare and program fees. District education councils in Yellowknife, Hay River and Inuvik receive priority weighting when applicant pools exceed available slots. Each council may endorse a maximum of two candidates per funding cycle. Proposals must demonstrate that the returning educator will deliver at least 50 hours of after-school or summer language exposure open to both Indigenous and non-Indigenous students. Unlike Alberta's metropolitan certification pathways, Northwest Territories review panels evaluate whether the proposed schedule aligns with the territorial school calendar that begins in mid-August and incorporates community harvesting breaks in September and May.
