Grant Overview
The Northwest Territories maintains only two permanent aurora research stations with calibrated all-sky cameras, both located south of the treeline. This leaves the Mackenzie Delta and Arctic coast without systematic data collection during peak solar cycle years.
Infrastructure constraints include limited electrical grid access outside Yellowknife and Hay River, forcing reliance on diesel generators that restrict continuous sensor operation. Workforce shortages appear in instrument technicians; the territorial college offers no dedicated atmospheric physics diploma, requiring applicants to recruit from southern universities.
Transportation of sensitive optical equipment depends on seasonal barge service or costly air cargo, raising per-project logistics costs above southern Canadian averages by 340 percent. Community outreach capacity is further limited by the absence of Indigenous language glossaries for aurora terminology in Gwich'in and Inuvialuktun.
Proposals must demonstrate secured access to one of the two existing research stations plus a secondary mobile deployment plan covering at least one coastal or delta community. Budgets require line items for winterized power systems and local language translation verified by the territorial language commissioner.
Unlike Yukon applications, Northwest Territories funding requires explicit coordination with the Aurora Research Institute's permitting process and inclusion of Dene or Inuvialuit knowledge holders as co-investigators on all educational modules.
